Charles Barnum
Charles Barnum shares his memories growing up in Renovo. He also shares stories about how his mother, Jane Barnum, took up employment in the railroad shops during WWII.
If you had 100 cars of coal, going up hills and things like that, takes a lot out of it, it would get hot…She told me different stories about being out in all types of weather. It was not the easiest job in the world.
That was the thing that was expected. I often thought for myself, that would be pretty hard for a woman to do--especially if she liked the job. Some people really like to be independent and they like to earn their own money and not have to depend upon their husband...I never heard anybody criticize that.
I think that everybody felt as though they needed to contribute in one way or another on the war. WIth everybody helping out, that was gonna make the war end sooner
I consider them veterans
One of the things that I noticed when I started teaching was that there wasn’t a whole lot of knowledge with the kids on the History of Renovo.
Something positive. It’s so easy to get caught up in the sad and rundown. But the people, they would appreciate something positive
